Former Intel India country head Avtar Saini was killed after a speeding cab hit him while he was cycling in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/navi-mumbai-drugs-by-students-for-students-via-vegetable-vendors-23337561" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Navi Mumbai township</a> of Maharashtra, police said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.
The accident took place at around 5.50 am on Wednesday, when ex-Intel India head Avtar Saini (68) was riding a bicycle along with fellow cyclists on the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/navi-mumbai-police-file-case-against-2-persons-for-rape-molestation-of-woman-23337477" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Palm Beach Road</a> in Nerul area, an official said, reported PTI.
The speeding cab hit Saini's bicycle from behind and the driver then tried to escape from the spot, with the bicycle's frame wedged under the front wheels of the cab, he said.
The ex-Intel India head received injuries and the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/navi-mumbai-anti-narcotics-cell-seizes-lsd-valued-at-rs-7-95-lakh-2-held-23337458" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">fellow cyclists</a> rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, the official said, reported PTI.
Saini, a resident of suburban Chembur, was credited with working on the Intel 386 and 486 microprocessors. He also went on to lead the design of the company's Pentium processor, reported PTI.
The police have registered an FIR against the cab driver under various <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/navi-mumbai-police-rescue-2-child-labourers-from-eateries-23337462" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Indian Penal Code sections</a>, including 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by doing an act rashly or negligently so as to endanger human life) and 304-A (causing death of any person by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide), and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, reported PTI.

The accused has not yet been arrested, an official from the NRI police station said.
In another incident, a 60-year-old woman labourer was killed after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) hit her in Maharashtra's Palghar district, following which a group of angry locals smashed the vehicle and beat up its two occupants, police aid on February 25, reported PTI.
The incident took place on Saturday evening on Satpala-Rajodi Road in Vasai area and the two SUV occupants were later arrested, they said.
The woman, who hailed from Murbad in neighbouring Thane district and worked as a labourer in Satpala, was walking home along with a colleague when the speeding SUV hit her, an official from Arnala Sagri police station said, reported PTI.
The woman fell down and died on the spot, he said.
After getting information about the incident, some locals rushed to the spot. They allegedly threw stones on the SUV and hit its windshield and windows with rods, reported PTI.
They also caught hold of two occupants of the car and beat them up, the official said.
A video of the damaged car went viral on social media platforms.
The police rushed to the spot and took the two car occupants into custody, the official said.
The woman's body was sent to a government hospital for postmortem following which the angry locals dispersed, the police said, reported PTI.
